What To Wear When Riding Your Motorcycle

In the protective gear section of the course, you'll learn:
  • What you should wear when riding a motorcycle.
  • Why protective gear makes riding more comfortable.
  • Why motorcyclists prefer protective gear.
  • How to protect against the elements and road debris.
  • How to be a better-informed shopper when buying protective gear.
  •  Key learning about protective gear - eye and face protection, face and visor shields, goggles, helmets, footwear, gloves, and more.

Helmets
To protect the head and brain, provide comfort and protect against hearing loss, helmets are designed to spread the forces of an impact throughout the helmet so less of the impact energy reaches the head and brain. Use DOT approved helmets. Your Basic RiderCourse sm will provide a detailed discussion of helmets and safety.

Eye and face protection (either goggles or visors) protect from wind, insects, dust and pebbles.

Jacket
Get a jacket made of leather or other man-made abrasion-resistant materials. A motorcycle jacket is designed to fit snugly, while containing extra padding to provide protection. Longer sleeves with full shoulders increase comfort while in a sitting position with your hands on the handlebars.

Motorcycle Gloves
Full-fingered gloves protect from the wind, sun, heat and cold. Using reinforced stitching and a gauntlet style glove also protects hands and wrists in case of a crash.

Long Pants
Pants also made of leather or other man-made abrasion-resistant material should be cut longer in length to cover your ankles while sitting. Some are made to wear over your regular clothing.

Footwear
Over-the-ankle boots made specifically for motorcycle riding protect from stones that fly up from the roadway, burns from hot exhaust pipes and provide a good grip on the footrests while riding and on the pavement when stopped. Good boots also provide valuable foot and ankle protection in a crash.
